Dave Chapplle's SNL Monologue After Trump Is Denied 2nd Term

| Comments

Chappelle returns to SNL to again its first live show after a presidential election. In both of his 2016 and 2020 monologues, he managed to encapsulate how many (based on popular vote) really felt after each election.

Chappelle is a seasoned comedian who is not afraid to share his perspective on today’s sensitive topics and issues. He’s one of those few comedians who can be funny, smart and thought provoking simultaneously. He’s my favorite comedian today because of his unique talent to expertly communicate his unique perspective in a way that will resonate with people who would otherwise never cross paths with anyone like him.

In his 2016 SNL monologue, Chappelle ended his monologue by extending an olive branch to our friends on the other side of the political aisle. He said, “I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. I’m going to give him a chance, and we the historically disenfranchised demand that he gives us one too.”

In his 2020 monologue, the tone was not that different. Yes, he took some strong jabs at Trump and his administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Chappelle’s monologue was dark, but I believe better resonates with people regardless of their political affiliation. He urged Biden voters to consider the grievances of millions of voters on the other side and connected those feelings to the lived experiences of generations of Black Americans.

He ends his 16-minute set by suggesting that Americans to be more introspective and examine the root of their hate. It could be the hatred felt towards others of a different race or their own socio-economic status. He ends by confessing that’s what he hates. That feeling of not belonging or feeling hated by your own country because of the way you look or the way you’ve chosen to live your life. Chappelle said, “what I fight through; that’s what I suggest you fight through,” he said. “You gotta find a way to forgive each other. Gotta find joy in your existence in spite of that feeling.”
